About Tom and Michael:
Dr. Tom Sweeney is Professor Emeritus of Counselor Education in the College of Education at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio. He earned his Bachelor’s degree at the University of Akron, and his Master’s degree in counseling at the University of Wisconsin (Madison). His doctoral degree in Counselor Education was received from Ohio State University.
Dr. Sweeney worked as a teacher and school counselor prior to receiving his doctoral degree. After he received his doctorate, he taught at the University of South Carolina for eight years where he developed their counselor education program from a faculty of one and a quarter persons to eight faculty members, four secretaries, and a modern counselor education laboratory and faculty suite. He was also Program Coordinator of Counselor Education and Director of the School of Applied Behavioral Sciences and Educational Leadership at Ohio University. Since taking early retirement from Ohio University in 1992, he taught one quarter each year through 2005.
Dr. Sweeney has served the profession of counseling in numerous capacities including the Executive Director and founding President of Chi Sigma Iota Counseling Academic and Professional Honor Society International (CSI), American Counseling Association(ACA) state branch President, the first ACA Southern Region Branch Assembly Chair, President of the Southern Association for Counselor Education and Supervision (SACES), President of the Association for Counselor Education and Supervision (ACES), President of the American Counseling Association (ACA), founding Chair of the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP), founding President of the International Association for Marriage and Family Counseling (IAMFC), and an elected Board Member of both the Association for Adult Development and Aging (AADA) and the National Association for Career Development (NACD). Michael D. Brubaker is an Associate Professor and Coordinator of the Counseling Program in the School of Human Services in the College of Education, Criminal Justice, and Human Services at the University of Cincinnati. Licensed to practice chemical dependency counseling in Ohio, he is also a Nationally Certified Counselor. He received his Ph.D. in Mental Health Counseling from the University of Florida, his M.S. in Professional Counseling from Georgia State University, his M.Div. from Emory University, and his B.S. in Business Administration from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Dr. Brubaker’s clinical and research interests have focused on underserved and socially marginalized populations including the homeless, those who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT), and ethnic minorities. Taking a combined strengths and social justice perspective, he has sought to address clinical and social barriers to substance abuse and mental health services for these populations.
Since 2003, Dr. Brubaker has presented in various international, national, and regional conferences including those of the American Counseling Association (ACA), the National Association for Counselor Education and Supervision (ACES), the Association for Specialists in Group Work (ASGW), and the North Central Association for Counselor Education and Supervision (NCACES). His work has appeared in Journal of Addictions and Offender Counseling, Journal of Counselor Leadership & Advocacy, Journal of Drug Education, Journal of LGBT Issues in Counseling, Journal for Specialists in Group Work, Sexual Addiction and Compulsivity, and Addiction Professional. He is also the senior author of the book, Advancing your career: Getting and making the most of your doctorate. Dr. Brubaker has been awarded the Golden Apple Award for Excellence in Teaching for four years by the College of Education, Criminal Justice, and Human Services and was recognized by Cincy Magazine as an Outstanding Educator in 2014.
