About this Episode:
A conversation with Nicole Stargell and Matt Glowiak on connecting with our communities “beyond the couch.” We discuss the history of counselor community engagement, important considerations when starting out, and possible barriers to community outreach.
Nicole A. Stargell, Ph. D., LPCA, LSC, NCC is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Counseling at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke. She serves as the Clinical Mental Health Counseling Field Placement Coordinator, the Counseling Programs Testing Coordinator, and Chapter Faculty Advisor of the Phi Sigma Chapter of CSI at UNCP. She is a member of the UNCP Institutional Review Board, the ACA Practice Brief Advisory group, and the editorial board for Counseling Outcome Research & Evaluation and Teaching and Supervision in Counseling.

Matt Glowiak, PhD, LCPC, CAADC, NCC, completed his masters in Mental Health Counseling and doctorate in Counselor Education and Supervision at Walden University. His dissertation examined veteran educators’ perceptions of the Internet’s impact on K-8 learning and social development. Dr. Glowiak is an Illinois Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC), Certified Advanced Alcohol and Other Drug Counselor (CAADC), and National Certified Counselor (NCC) who is committed to excellence in every facet of the counseling profession.
From 2015-2017 Dr. Glowiak served as contributing faculty in the BS of Human Services and Psychology Programs at Walden University and as Assistant Professor of the Masters of Clinical Psychology program at Benedictine University. Since 2017 he has served as core clinical faculty at Southern New Hampshire University. In the classroom he is dedicated toward addressing the various learning needs and styles of his students to help optimize success. Dr. Glowiak has an emerging record of scholarship as outlined through refereed journal publications, magazine and newsletter articles, several book chapters, and multiple presentations.
As an entrepreneur Dr. Glowiak, along with Kasis Wereszczynska, is co-founder of “counseling speaks” in Park Ridge, Lake Forest, and Chicago, Illinois–a practice focused on clinical counseling, consultation, coaching, supervision, crisis intervention, and psychoeducational services and products. Clinically, he has experience working with children, adolescents, and adults. Dr. Glowiak has worked with clients who present a variety of concerns and issues such as substance use disorder, domestic violence, mood disorders, anxiety disorders, sexual trauma, and bipolar disorder.
Dr. Glowiak is also committed to counselor and client advocacy as evidenced through his leadership roles in multiple flagship organizations and community service within others. He is Past President of Chi Sigma Iota (CSI) Omega Zeta Chapter (Walden University), was named a CSI International Leadership Fellow in 2014, and is also Past President of the Chicago Counseling Association. Dr. Glowiak is currently the Counselor Community Engagement Committee Chair for CSI International, member of the American Counseling Association (ACA) Publications Committee, and Illinois Counseling Association (ICA) Conference Event Chair.
